Thai Rice - Strengthening Climate Smart Rice Farming
GIZ’s Thai Rice project works with Thai government partners, including the Rice Department, to help more than 250,000 rice farmers adopt climate-smart farming practices. The project aims to lower emissions from rice fields and help farms adapt to a changing climate. GIZ commissioned Digital Distinct to produce a five-minute film introducing the project in Thailand. We handled the full production, from scripting and storyboarding to the final edit.
We built the film around two rice farmers, telling the project through their own stories. Both farmers talk about how farming has changed over the years, the pressure of making a living from rice, and what they have changed since joining the project. Their stories run alongside GIZ’s mission and the work happening in the field, so viewers see what the project means for real families and their communities. The film closes on how each farmer sees the future.

We developed the script and storyboard with GIZ. We planned how the farmers’ interviews would carry the story and where the project’s goals and actions would fit in. We reviewed the storyline with GIZ before finalising the shoot plan. We then scheduled three days of filming across northern and central Thailand around the interviews, the fieldwork and travel between provinces.

Over three days, our crew filmed on location in central Thailand. We recorded interviews with both farmers on their own land, along with footage of their daily work and the communities around them. In the edit, we moved between the two farmers’ stories and GIZ’s work across the country, and built them into a single five-minute film.
